Why Birth Month Flowers?

Most of us know the special birthstone that represents our birthday month. As gifts, these stones can be truly special, and often expensive. Just like stones, each month has a flower to symbolize our birthday. As the most popular gift in the world, flowers have held a special place in all cultures, dating back to pre-biblical times. The Ancient Greeks and Romans were inspired by the mythological energy of flowers, ​and sought them out for medicinal and healing value. More recently, the language of flowers was further developed in the Victorian era; a time when it was considered inappropriate to verbally express feelings of love and affection. As such, messages were assigned to specific flowers so lovers could convey their true romantic meanings.

Today, flowers represent so much more. People can now share the meaning and emotions of each birth month with a beautiful, permanent photograph and elegantly written words. Every month has a flower that is rich in history and symbolizes something special. The Founder’s Story : Chris Austermann 

Expressions in Bloom founder, Chris Austermann, developed a love of photography at an early age. He was first inspired by his grandfather, when he was gifted his classic Leica, circa 1950’s. Chris’ father was also an avid photographer who captured hundreds of photos from various travels. He often enlarged the images and invested in high quality framing.

When he was 13, Chris bought his first single lens reflex camera from the money he earned cutting lawns, shoveling snow and delivering the local daily newspaper. He went on to take all available photography classes and was a member of his high school yearbook staff. In college he became the exclusive year book photographer for his Senior Class.

In 2008, Chris bought his first digital SLR. In February, 2009 during an excursion through Yellowstone National Park, he was inspired by a fellow traveler to start marketing his landscape and floral photography. It was at Jackson Hole ski resort where he became curious about the concept of Birth Month Flowers.

​He spent the next decade collecting images of all the monthly birth flowers until he created his first edition of the Expressions in Bloom collection. Outfitted with a new lens in the Spring of 2021, Chris is rarely without his camera. As the spring and summer flowers take their turns blooming, Chris will be there to capture them in all their splendid beauty and carefully created for you to enjoy in the form of unique gifts and collectables.

Chris Austermann Photography is looking forward to expanding the Expressions In Bloom collection to include a 2023 calendar, greeting cards, mugs, t-shirts, mouse pads and other functional items. In addition, he will expand his wall art to include prints on canvas, metal and glass.​
